Unaffordable: Economy shatters private-school dreams

An unstable economy is forcing thousands of children to leave Florida's private schools for a public education or lessons taught by Mom and Dad at home.
About 14,000 students were taken out of private schools last school year -- part of an exodus of more than 46,000 kids since 2004, according to numbers released this week by the Florida Department of Education.
And officials expect the number to keep climbing.
UF will cut jobs, slash enrollment

Gaining admission to the University of Florida will become even harder as it slashes undergraduate enrollment by 4,000 students, lays off 138 faculty and staff members, and eliminates some courses and degree programs to make up for the loss of $47 million in state money.
The sweeping cuts announced Monday by UF President Bernie Machen reflect the pressure all 11 of Florida's public universities are under to trim ongoing costs because of declining state revenues.

TALLAHASSEE -- On Tuesday, Florida voters passed a property-tax cut with Gov. Charlie Crist as chief cheerleader. On Thursday, the governor proposed a $70 billion budget that calls for additional property-tax money for schools.
