The $4 gallon of gasoline could be reality this May, an AAA spokesman said this week.

"We think it is a very real possibility, unfortunately," said Gregg Laskoski, spokesman for AAA Auto Club South in Tampa.

Chris McCarty, director of the Survey Research Center at the University of Florida's Bureau of Economic and Business Research, said he expects some people will cut back on travel if gas prices continue to rise.

"If it gets to $4 a gallon, I do not think anything horrific will happen," he said. "In Britain, people spend twice as much as we do on gasoline, and people still drive."
